About the British Pharmacological Society
The BPS is the primary UK learned society concerned with research into drugs and the way they work. Our members work in academia, industry and the health services, and many are medically qualified. The Society covers the whole spectrum of pharmacology, including the laboratory, clinical and toxicological aspects.
BPS Services and activities include the following:
Membership
• Attendance to regular BPS meetings at members’ rates (free or discounted)
• Eligibility to apply for bursaries and travel grants to attend meetings in the UK and overseas

Scientific Meetings
The general scientific meetings of the BPS are usually held in the Summer (June/July) and Winter (December/January) and cover all aspects of pharmacology. We also host a variety of focused meetings throughout the year. Details of forthcoming meetings can be found at www.bps.ac.uk
Education
The Diploma is run by the British Pharmacological Society and is awarded to participants who successfully complete a structured programme of study. The programme includes attending workshops, writing a dissertation and presenting at BPS meetings.
pharma-CAL-ogy is the product name for a range of over 50 software, video and Teachers’ Workbooks titles produced by pharmacologists and distributed by the British Pharmacological Society.

To address the gender gap identified in its membership, the BPS, with the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET, has established a mentoring scheme for women in pharmacology. The aim of this scheme is to facilitate networking and interaction with role models, providing practical advice, motivation and increased confidence for mentees.

Established in 2004 in response to the BPS/Physiological Society survey on in vivo education in UK universities, the BPS Integrative Pharmacology Fund was set up to develop strategies to support in vivo research and training in Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology.

BPS Clinical Section
The clinical section welcomes as members doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and other health-care workers with an interest in clinical pharmacology, therapeutics, and practical prescribing. It also welcomes scientists working to understand the actions of drugs in humans and those working in drug discovery and development. Benefits of membership include access to scientific meetings of interest to those concerned with human pharmacology, CPD, bursaries, travel awards and grants, and free access to the online version of the Society’s clinical Journal, the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.
Society membership covers a variety of categories, from undergraduate through to Fellowship, and more detailed information about each membership type can be found here. Membership of the Clinical Pharmacology Section is free to those for whom clinical work is relevant.
